Volleyball Week One Recap

After dropping their opening match to Roncalli on Aug. 16, the Flashes rallied big for their first full week of play. In their first away contest on Aug. 20, the Flashes took on Perry Meridian. The Falcons took the first set while the Flashes bounced back with a big victory in set two. Though the Flashes jumped out to a seven point lead in the third, the Falcons returned the favor and rallied to take the set. Aggressive serving pressure and efficient attacking were key in the marginal 28-26 fourth set victory. After falling down 5-10 in the fifth, the team refocused and put the pressure back on the Falcons with their serve. Senior Brenna Storz went on a run to close the gap. Momentum rolled for the Flashes and the team came away with their first win of the season, winning the fifth 15-11. Junior setter Emily Williams posted a career high 54 assist, which is good for second all-time for assists in a match. She added 18 digs and 4 aces, giving her her first double-double of the season. Junior libero Katie Bailey lead the defensive charge with 19 digs while junior DS Cicily Borders posted 18 and sophomore outside hitter Ryelle Koomler added 16. The team totaled 82 digs in the match. The Flashes had three attackers in double-digits kills. Koomler had 19, giving her a double-double on the night. Senior middle blocker Brenna Storz had 11 kills while junior middle blocker Brooklyn Wake had 12, the pair combined for 9 blocks on the night. As a team, the Flashes posted 60 kills, a school record for kills in match, and a hitting percentage of 0.225%, a school record in its match category as well. The next night, the Flashes returned home to face county rival, Warren Central. The Warriors came out hot and took the first set 27-25. The Flashes bounced back with a big response, taking the second set 25-7. The next two sets were controlled by the Flashes who won the match 3-1. The win was a team effort, with all players seeing action. Freshman outside hitter Delaney Cooper had her first double-digit kill night with 11. On Saturday, Aug. 23, the Flashes hosted their home invitational. In the first match the Flashes took on the Beech Grove Hornets. Senior opposite, Sydney Hendrickson lead the offensive effort with seven kills while junior setter Amelia Nichols quarterbacked the offense with 17 assists. Williams was a force at the service line with a match high 9 aces, which is a school record for aces in a tournament match. Match two was played against the Martinsville Artesians. Koomler lead the way with 13 kills. Bailey posted another double-digit dig match with 10. With the 2-0 win over the Artesians, the Flashes moved on to the championship pool. In the semi-finals, the Flashes faced off against the Bulldogs of Columbus North. After dropping a close first set, the Flashes hunkered down and took the second to force a third. The Flashes closed out the match winning 15-11 in the third. Williams posted another double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs. Koomler had 14 kills while Borders lead the defensive effort with 12 digs. In the championship, the Flashes played the Pendleton Heigh Arabians. The Flashes took control from the match from the very beginning. Koomler posted another double-digit kill match with 13 while Williams had 30 assists and 3 aces. With this win the Flashes moved to 6-1 on the season, capping off a perfect 6-0 week. They also brought home the Flashes Invite championship. The Flashes hit the road this week to take on Franklin Community (Monday), Southport (Tuesday) and their first conference matchup against Westfield (Thursday). The squad returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 3rd to face Whiteland Community.
